My Favorite Home Remedies

Magic-EFT-WandBefore dropping my son at his college dorm, I made sure he had my favorite ingredients for home remedies:  Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar.  – I don’t know about curing cancer, but my son used the baking soda protocol below during his first year at UVa and stayed healthy, while his roommate caught frequent colds.

Both remedies seem to alkalize the body, something we are hearing about more frequently as being important to good health – especially good dental health! Seems an alkaline environment is not germ or virus friendly.

I learned about the vinegar form a book called Folk Medicine: A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health, by D.C. Jarvis, MD (1958.  Canada. George J McLeod, LTD).  I stumbled upon this book at a library used book sale and it’s a treasure. My copy is the 12th printing!

I’m not sure how I come across baking soda – but it has myriad uses: tooth polish and exfoliante, laundry additive, among others. I am including one of many web references below.

Please remember to go slowly, use common sense and acknowledge that you are taking full responsibility for anything you put on or in your body!

Vinager

I use this to prevent colds and to open blocked sinuses.  When my children were small, I altered the recipe by adding apple juice.  They named it Spicy Juice and still call it that, even though they make it for themselves now and no longer add apple juice.

Started by covering the bottom of a juice cup or coffee cup with vinegar (about a Tbsp), added apple juice to the ½ way point, and filled the rest of the cup with water.

1Tbsp – more or less
2-4 oz water,
Optional: 2-4 oz apple juice (just use water if you can)

Sip it over 10-20 minutes.

I pour vinegar in my water bottle and sip throughout the morning, and refill for the afternoon. Some people take a tablespoon or more every day.  Vinager is the basis for the product called Jogging in a Jug. http://www.jogginginajug.com/apple-cider-vinegar-cures/ and they recommend a daily dose. There are a number of “recipes” floating around for this type of tonic, if you don’t want to buy the official version.

I don’t know if there is a limit on how much vinegar you can take, but of course don’t take enough to make yourself ill.  Unless you are a glutton for punishment, don’t take it straight – a friend did that (she didn’t listen to me) and said she threw up! I’m not surprised.

Baking Soda

This is not the entire article, but enough to get you started. Google it yourself and learn more.

Baking Soda as an All-Natural Cold Remedy    Retrieved 1/19/15 http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/salud/salud_defeatcancer45.htm

In a booklet published in 1924 titled, “Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Medical Uses,” Dr. Volney S. Cheney states:

“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘flu’ with the U. S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely anyone who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks.

I have since that time treated all cases of ‘cold,’ influenza and LaGripe by first giving generous doses of bicarbonate of soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated.

Further, within my own household, before Woman’s Clubs and Parent-Teachers’ Associations, I have advocated the use of bicarbonate of soda as a preventive for “colds,” with the result that now many reports are coming in stating that those who took “soda” were not affected, while nearly everyone around them had the “flu.”

Recommended dosages from the Arm & Hammer Company for colds and influenza back in 1925 were:

  • Day 1 – Take six doses of ½ teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water, at about two hour intervals
  • Day 2 – Take four doses of ½ teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water, at the same intervals
  • Day 3 – Take two doses of ½ teaspoon of baking soda in glass of cool water morning and evening
  • Thereafter ½ teaspoon in glass of cool water each morning until cold symptoms are gone.

(Some say you can do this for a maximum of two weeks.)

There you go – hope this is of some help. And as always

Be Well,

  1. I KNOW my body has been too alkaline for a LONG time Thanks for this tip! I needed it. Now the follow through with action! : )

    1. It’s easier than you think! Just small changes, build them into habits…
Try vinegar and oil instead of bottled salad dressing, have a little vinegar in water daily (sweeten it with honey if you need to), brush your teeth with baking soda – it’s very refreshing and a good polisher.
Let me know what you come up with! Thanks for commenting!
